Re: [independence-1] Price of gas giving you GAS? Read this and pass it on

I would recommend to anyone considering passing on a message by email that they first consult
http://www.snopes.com
I have found it highly reliable, and its coverage excellent.  Relatively few new "pass it on" emails get generated, but the same old ones get recycled all the time.  Type in a unique phrase from the email - for this one I used "Kinder-Morgan Pipeline" and got back this:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/gastips.asp
It handles the subject well.

If I may add a bit to what they say - doing all of the things suggested in the email won't make nearly as much difference as any one of the following:
1) Accelerate more slowly and try to brake less by anticipating when you are going to have to slow down.  If you think your car has two speeds, stop and go, you are part of the problem.
2) Keep your tires inflated to or above the pressure recommended in your owner's manual (but below the maximum indicated on the tire's sidewall)
3) The next time you buy tires, consider rolling resistance among the factors you consider in your purchase
4) Take anything that flaps in the wind off your vehicle.  Those American flags of great patriotism actually increase gas consumption appreciably at freeway speeds, as do the Vikings, Twins, and other flags attached to vehicles.

Of course, the best way to save gas, as Tom said, is not to burn it in the first place.  Excess calories are a wonderful alternative energy source.

Buying gas from a company that doesn't import from the Middle East doesn't make a whit of difference in the current world economy.  Oil is a worldwide commodity, and when a nation stops buying oil from place X, other nations happily buy it from X and sell it to us (literally or in effect) at a higher price.

On Paul's second point - he's dead-on right.  Fuel cells are just the latest example.  I worked on a Ford/DOE project to convert a Ford Escort wagon to a hybrid in 1991.  That's 1991, kids - before the Toyota Prius was even on the drawing board.  A handful of marketable hybrid Escorts came out of that effort, but Ford decided not to build any of them.  The markup has higher and the risk lower on SUV's.  That's why they are where they are today, which is sad.  DOE seems hell-bent on exactly what Paul said "we are looking into alternatives" - and when we find one, we'll do our best to bury it and find a different workable one, that we can bury as well.  As for GM and "Go Green" - remember the Impact?  Er, the EV-1?  They really did pull the plug on it with malicious intent - the people leasing them liked them too much.

'm sorry to create such a controversial subject, but I beleive in buying American made products and I'm trying to give the group some helpful hints and saving money...not trying to create a ruckus, I'm not into creating drama!

I do have to disagree with Tom though on the subject of finding alternatives to gas, as long as the Government is run by a man that has stock and runs an oil company with his family(George HW, jeb, and the rest of the Bush clan) the U.S. Gov't will always tell us they are looking into alternatives, but fuel will always be out lifeline, till we run out, and by then, The war will have consumed us all anyways...

This is pure nonsense, swatting at flies for all the difference it can make.

High prices are good because it is what will create the economic incentives for alternatives. Gas will still be cheap at $10/gallon compared to its intrinsic value and viable alternatives. (Ever try pushing an out-of-as car for a few blocks or a mile?! How about uphill?)

The only serious short term solution to reducing our demand for oil is to DRIVE LESS. Lose your car, share a car, use mass transit, ride a bike, live closer to work, etc...

These solutions won't solve our impending energy crisis, but it'll mean you'll have more money to pay for new solutions rather than being part of the problem.

: This is worth taking a minute to read!!

From a petroleum expert.

-----

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.

One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and otherpetroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on lowspeed, there by minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping.

All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internalfloating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick upsome of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS! WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. Itmight even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. Weshould return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia.

Just buy from gas companies that don'timport their oil from the Saudis.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-upthe tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends.

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import MiddleEastern oil.

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell.......................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil.............. 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans.

Ifyou do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION!(oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel)

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil: Sunoco..................0 barrels
Conoco..................0 barrels
Sinclair................0 barrels
BP/Phillips............0 barrels
Hess.......................0 barrels
ARCO....................0 barrels

If you go to Sunoco. com, you will get a list of the station locations near you.

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gasbuyers. It's really simple to do.

Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more
(300 x 10 = 3,000) and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREEMILLION consumers!!!!!!! If that! three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLIONPEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people.

How long would all that take?
